With the demands and expectations in today’s workplace, it is common place to find employees who are only interested in their take home pay. From lacklustre demeanor stress induced anxiety. These are some of the traits exhibited by most employees on a regular basis. As an employer, you should be able to consciously design an ideal work environment for your employees.
Good Morale in the workplace is a great indicator of a united and productive team. A team who aligns with the mission and vision of the company will possess high morale. This is noticed by the employees attitude towards work, high collaborative tendencies to make sure things work seamlessly and general employee satisfaction just to mention a few.
HOW TO BUILD AN IDEAL WORK ENVIRONMENT
To ensure employees morale is high and remain high, Companies should have a couple of things in mind.
To keep the team on focus and bring employees up to date with how things were left off from the previous day. It is advisable to have a brief morning meeting with all members of staff. If it’s a very big organization then a meeting amongst the heads of different units will suffice.
This meeting is like a discussion on the “journey so far”, since everyone is working towards the same goal. Staying informed will enable the team know if they’re on the right path to achieving their aim. If anyone is found wanting, it is easier at this point to find their way back with other team members. This morning meetings also have to be kept as short as possible. A couple of minutes should be enough so that it doesn’t encroach into the main business of the day.
Taking breaks during work should be an integral part of a company’s culture. It helps take employees’ minds away from the task at hand for a moment. It also provides an opportunity for them to catch up individually before going back to conclude for the day. Breaks could become boosters for members of staff to ensure they finish their tasks in a timely fashion. You see, no one wants to miss their break time. At the same time, no one wants to be the one who is dragging the team back on a project because they didn’t finish up their task on time. It is also a time employees use to “refuel” by having lunch or snacks.
Some companies do not make this provision available for their employees and it impacts their overall performance. Employees in this situation take unsolicited breaks during work hours. And since it is done in an incoherent manner, such breaks will not achieve the intended effect of creating a relaxed atmosphere.
Some of the best relationships an employee can have is an informal relationship with their workmate. This obviously cannot be achieved if they only meet in the office all the time. Meeting in the office during work hours/days will mostly limit interaction to work related topics. As a result, this will give no room for workmates to get to know each other on individual basis. This is limiting.
Companies who make provision to spend time together off workdays or during holidays tend to have a high level of morale boost amongst employees hereby building or creating an ideal work environment.
A dinner night, a visit to the beach, a visit to the cinema, volunteering for community service… the aim here is to have an informal outing as a team. Employees get the chance to see each other in ways outside being workmates, the tend to bond in personal ways and become friends.
A group of friends working together is a win-win for both the employer and the employees. Everyone is happy and as such more willing to collaborate with each other. Productivity is certain to be on the increase as well in an atmosphere like this because you are building an ideal work environment for this to take place.
You read right! Recreation! Most employers or organizations miss how necessary recreation is to the well being of employees. This makes them loose out on how it helps enhance their overall performance.
Recreation is vital for general refreshment after a stressful day, week or month depending on how and when you choose to recreate.
Imagine each unit in an organization making up a team and playing a friendly competition against each other at games such as football, basketball, volleyball e.t.c. These activities serve two purposes; on the one hand, it is a way to enable employees cultivate the habit of team spirit and unity amongst themselves. On the other hand, it serves as a means of exercise (fitness) as well. Regularly keeping fit will ensure less cases of having to visit the doctor. This will ensure that employees are more at hand and fit as well to deliver when necessary.
Appreciation is underrated, in most cases management feel paying salaries is appreciation enough and should boost morale. Indeed it should but it can be better. Experience shows that employees who are commended for a “job well done” tend to develop and get better at their role. These employees do better than those who are always made to believe they come up short in what they do.
Awarding excellence by giving out gifts periodically to deserving members of staff will send a message that value is highly appreciated. This will motivate employees to do more so as to become recipient of such awards and as such create the ideal work environment you want.
